Energy Efficiency Project Supports Sustainable Community Development

To date, the “Nevyansk-Favorite City” Project, implemented under the USAID-funded Replication of Lessons Learned (ROLL) Program for sustainable development of model communities in Russia has already saved Nevyansk a total of 500,000 rubles (approximately $17,710) in energy costs—roughly ten percent of the municipality’s total annual budget for insulation.

Under the project’s auspices, the pumping and ventilation facilities of the city boiler were rebuilt in 2005, benefiting over 2,500 city residents. The City Council approved a comprehensive new program to reconstruct the heating mains of the boiler plant, which will serve as the reinvestment mechanism for energy savings in Nevyansk. Since then, nearly 500 meters of insulation at heating mains and sub-mains have been upgraded, resulting in savings equivalent to the energy needed to heat 400 one-bedroom apartments. About 7,000 citizens will benefit by the end of this project, with USAID’s program saving the municipality an estimated 1.5 million rubles (about $53,130).
