Developed vs. Developing Countries

Development Hockey - ODW Norway

Development hockey is a great game to demonstrate the facts that 1) no one gets to choose where they are born, and 2) many people have advantages and disadvantages based on where they are born. Here is how to play.

Set up the gym for a game of floor hockey. Have people pick at random which one of two teams they will be on. One team represents developed countries like the U.S. The other team represents a developing country. Give the developed country team normal hockey sticks and the developing country team sticks with no flat part on the end (like broom sticks).

Play a game of hockey against each other. After the game, have the group talk about what the game showed them.

Countries for a Day - ODW Norway

This exercise teaches many of the same lessons as Development Hockey. It demonstrates the facts that 1) no one gets to choose where they are born, and 2) many people have advantages and disadvantages based on where they are born.

Have the class divide at random into two groups by drawing from a hat. One group will be developed countries and the other will be developing countries. Throughout the day you can have arbitrary differences in how each group is treated. For example, at lunch have students from the developed country group eat a normal lunch while the developing country group eats only rice and water. Or have one group sit in chairs in class while the other sits on the floor.

At the end of the day, have both groups talk together about their day's experience.
