United Day of Service
Administrator Andrew S. Natsios participated in the 1st Annual United Day of Service, Wednesday, September 11, 2002, at the Lincoln Memorial to commemorate the victims of September 11, 2001. The Administrator was the presenter for the Freedom Lives Award and made remarks on U.S. volunteerism and generosity internationally. The United Day of Service "Freedom Lives Award” was bestowed on USAID/Operation Day's Work student, Laura Bloomer. A 13-year old middle school 8th grader from Quincy, Massachusetts, Laura, through her school's Operation Day's Work program, planted a "Peace Garden" as their fundraising project and also coordinated a "Kids' Fair to Benefit Children Orphaned by the Attack on America" in response to September 11, 2001.
Young people from across the country came together on September 11, 2002 to commemorate the victims of September 11, 2001, in the 1st Annual United Day of Service. They were joined by police, firefighters, teachers, and other civic leaders. "American Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson sang the national anthem, and actor Sean Astin of Lord of the Rings emceed the ceremony. The event featured a procession of 300 youth flag bearers, a choir singing "The Unity Anthem," and the presentation of Champions of Hope Gold Medals to youth for outstanding service and leadership around five United Day of Service project areas: hunger, literacy, the environment, emergency relief, and children's health.
