Operation Day's Work Elects New National Committee

Operation Day's Work Students to Host 'Kids' Fair' to Benefit the Children Victims of September 11th Tragedy and Raise Funds for President Bush's Afghan Children's Fund - 11/02/01

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Students from the US Agency for International Development's (USAID) Operation Day's Work (ODW) founding member school Broad Meadows Middle School in Quincy, Massachusetts will host a fundraiser benefiting children who lost one or both parents as a result of the tragedy on September 11th.

ODW Students to Improve Education and Literacy in Nepal - 3/28/01

ODW students across the country have selected the project proposal submitted by Educate the Childen (www.etc-nepal.org) to be the recipient of funds raised during this year's Operation Day's Work campaign. Nepal's illiteracy rate, at 65%, is one of the highest in the world, and only one in five women is able to read and write at even the most basic level. This project will benefit more than 2,500 children in Nepal, improving dilapidated school conditions in many rural communities, and enrolling hundreds of children whose families could not otherwise afford to send them to school.


ODW Students to Address the United Nations - 11/27/00

Quincy, Massachusetts middle-schoolers Mary and Laura Bloomer on Monday, November 27, will join actress Glenn Close, Bob Goodwin, CEO of the Points of Light Foundation, Mrs. Nane Annan, wife of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, to kick off International Year of the Volunteers 2001 at the United Nations. Mary and Laura Bloomer will discuss their experiences as international volunteers in ODW.


ODW Convention Amends Constitution - 10/25/00

Delegates to the recent ODW Annual Convention made several changes to the ODW Consititution. Most of these amendments give member schools more flexibility in implementing their program, recruiting sponsors, and raising funds. You can read the newly amended ODW Constitution here!


ODW to Assist Nepal in 2000-01 School Year - 10/16/00

Delegates to the ODW convention in Minnesota last weekend chose Nepal as the country that ODW schools will assist during the 2000-01 school year. Presentations were made by delegates about the needs of Nepal, as well as Ethiopia, Mozambique, Senegal and Bolivia. Delegates recognized that each of these countries is in great need of assistance and expressed a desire to help those not chosen this year in the future. ODW staff will now solicit proposals for projects in Nepal that schools will vote on in late February.


National Committee Sets 2000-01 Calendar - 9/13/00

The ODW National Committee voted to set the calendar for the 2000-01 school year. Dates have been set for schools to join ODW, the project vote and workdays. To view the entire calender for the year, visit our Requirements & Calendar page.


ODW Annual Convention to Convene in Minnesota - 8/15/00

The ODW Annual Convention will be held in Bemidji, MN on October 12-15. Schools who completed last school years ODW program will be asked to send delegates to the convention. At the convention, delegates will select a new country to support in the 2000-01 school year, elect a new ODW National Committee, and make any necessary changes to the ODW Constitution.


ODW Schools Raise $40,000 - 7/25/00

The ODW member schools raised just over $40,000 during the 1999-2000 school year for their project in El Salvador. The money was raised by students in 19 schools who participated in Operation Day's Work.

In March of this year, ODW students across the nation voted to fund a project in El Salvador to be implemented by Salesian Missions. The $40,000 raised by students will go to this project which will provide three years of basic education, vocational training, emotional counseling and job placement for 150 El Salvadoran youth who were orphaned as a result of their nation's civil war.
