New USAID Mission Director for Nicaragua Sworn In

WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced today the swearing in of Alexander Dickie as its new Mission Director for Nicaragua. Administrator Andrew S. Natsios presided at the event and administered the oath to Mr. Dickie.

As Mission Director for USAID/Nicaragua, Dickie will oversee a program totaling approximately $45 million annually. The program will focus on three strategic objectives: ruling justly for more responsive and transparent governance; economic freedom for open and diverse expanding economies, and investing in better health and education for the people.

"I feel deeply honored by the opportunity to serve the Agency in Nicaragua. I look forward to the next four years as we continue to do all in our power to strengthen democracy and provide greater economic opportunity for the people," said Dickie.

With more than 20 years of experience in international development, Dickie most recently served as Acting Mission Director for Honduras. In 1998, he served as Assistant Mission Director for Jamaica & Caribbean Regional Program at USAID/Jamaica. In 1993, Dickie was the Team Leader for the Central America Regional Program that is responsible for the regulation and capacity to support sustainable natural resource management, conservation of biodiversity and trade, and harmonization of laws in USAID/Guatemala.

Prior to his work with USAID, Dickie worked as an International Livestock Marketing Advisor in Somalia with a public-private alliance to strengthen competitiveness. He also was a Range Management Specialist and Field Supervisor in Senegal and a Range Management Specialist in Tanzania.

The new mission director was influenced early in life to pursue a career in international development. Dickie's father was an Agriculture Development Officer for USAID/Kenya and later served as Mission Director for Sierra Leon and Guyana. A native of Denton, Texas, Dickie is a 1976 graduate of Texas A&M University with a B.S. in Natural Resource Management. In 1982 he received his Masters in Range Science, Ecology and Land Use Planning. Dickie obtained a Ph.D. from Utah State University in Range Science & Economics in 1986. He is married to Tracey Parker and has two children, Clare and Alex. Dickie is fluent in Spanish and Swahili, and has working knowledge of French.
